Frederique Kua-Toko

Frédérique Kua-Toko is well known for his enthusiastic efforts in humanitarian work with the mental health and homeless survivors of the Civil Wars in Africa. Born and raised in La République Démocratique du Congo (RDC), he too is a survivor of the civil wars in Africa and a mental health survivor. Fred left RDC in 1985 at the age of twenty to pursue university studies in North America. He attended Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia, where he obtained post baccalaureate degree in Business Administration. He also attended Mercer University Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia, where he also pursued graduate studies in Christian Ministry.

Fred also spent 2 years at McMaster University Graduate School of Divinity in Hamilton, specializing in Biblical interpretation, Greek and Hebrew languages.

Fred is a survivor of advanced depression, PTSD, and Schizophrenia. He currently facilitates both the Peer Support Group at the Across Boundaries in Toronto, Ontario. He also co-facilitates the Service User Advisory Committee at the Across Boundaries, an ethno-racial community mental health centre.

He is an active proud member of the Dream Team organization. He joined the Dream Team for its commitment to uphold the importance of Supportive Housing in the community. As a former resident of Supportive Housing, Fred speaks highly of Supportive Housing for the memorable help he received at Supportive Housing, during his early years in Canada.

Fred also leads presentations and seminars at the Toronto North Support Services, which provides access to mental health Case Management, Assertive Community Treatment Teams (ACTT), and Supportive Housing services in Toronto.

Fred does public speaking to bring awareness of the negative impact of the civil wars on the survivors, (adults and children alike). He often says that the impact of the violent and brutal civil wars and atrocious torture he experienced back home (in RDC) has contributed greatly to his mental health condition.  Fred looks forward to the day he will fully recover from mental health scourge. He believes mental health illness, which he’s suffered since his preteen years, has been a major road block to his success in life.

Frédérique is currently pursuing advanced studies in Financial Engineering. He hopes to help establish a transparent financial market in the Congo in hopes to invest in technology so to create good jobs for all the Congolese people.
